F.A.Q

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you teach beginners?

A: Yes. Not only do we love to teach absolute beginners but we also teach at every level of ability.

Q: How long and how often are the lessons?

A: We offer both 1/2 hr. & 1 hr. long lessons once a week. We suggest starting with a 1/2 hour for beginners and children. We offer 1 hour lessons for more advanced or ambitious students.

Q: How much do lessons cost?

A: Our tuition fees are very affordable. Lesson fees are determined by which program that you take. Tuition is prepaid monthly with no long-term contract.

Q: What type of music lessons do you offer?

A: We offer lessons for all ages on the Guitar, Piano, and Bass Guitar in a wide variety of styles. These are private lessons. We also offer The Childbloom Guitar Program. This is a great guitar program for kids between the ages of 5-12 and is typically structured into small groups.

We are also currently working on offering music lessons for all instruments as well as additional programs that will be unique to this area.

Q: What styles of music do you teach?

A: We teach a wide variety of styles. We teach Classical, Blues, Folk, and Rock-n-Roll to name a few.

Q: At what ages do you teach? Am I too old to learn?

A: No you are not. Our student base is comprised of people of all ages and level of ability! The age range is from 5 to 85!

Q: What are the teacher's qualifications?

A: Our award winning teachers are experienced professionals with music degrees from accredited universities. We are absolutely dedicated to providing you with the best music instruction possible. We have a progressive curriculum and use effective teaching methods that are result oriented and that guarantee extraordinary results. Our teachers will also help you develop proper and efficient playing techniques, ear training, music reading and all of the skills necessary to play well. Our teachers have many years of performing and teaching experience and are able to accommodate a wide variety of learning styles.

Q: How long does it take to learn an instrument?

A: There is no set answer of how long it takes to learn an instrument. With a regularly scheduled practice time on a daily basis, a basic level of playing can be achieved within a few weeks. Our students take lessons on a long term basis because they want to be constantly improving their abilities and find the lessons to be enjoyable.

Q: I do not have any musical background or ability. Can I still help my child with practice?

A: Yes. Even if you don't have any musical background your teacher will offer advice on how to help your child practice. By simply encouraging, listening and monitoring your child's practice habits your child will improve. Parents will sit in on their child's music lesson, take notes and get an idea of how a song should sound or how a student should be practicing correctly.

Q: What is the Childbloom Guitar Program?

A: The Childbloom Guitar Program is the nation's largest guitar program and was first established 40 years ago Kevin Taylor in Austin, TX. The Childbloom Guitar Program is also the only guitar program in the Syracuse area that specializes in effectively teaching the guitar to young children. This program is specifically designed for elementary aged kids between the ages of 5-12 and offers music, fun, and achievement in a low- pressure environment. Through the use of curriculum materials, parental involvement and a unique structure, the Childbloom student learns to play music quickly and enjoyably.

The instruments that we use for this program are size-appropriate acoustic nylon string guitars.

Q: What is the class size of the Childbloom Guitar Program?

A: We are structured into small group lessons. The maximum class size is up to 4 students and we need a minimum of 2 students to get started.

Q: Do you offer private guitar lessons for Childbloom?

A: Yes. We do have a number of private guitar students that are enrolled in the Childbloom Guitar Program.

Q: Where can I get a size-appropriate instrument?

A: We have new and used children's guitars that we sell here at the studio. We have 1/4 to full size nylon string guitars. We are specifically a teaching studio so we do not have a showroom that is open to the public. If you are in need of a small guitar but are unsure of the size that you need, we will make an appointment to size up your child with the proper instrument.

Q: Do you sell other instruments?

A: No. We are specifically a music teaching studio. We are not a music store. We only sell fine fractional size nylon-string guitars for classical guitar students or for children that are enrolled in the Childbloom Guitar Program. We do not sell any other instruments or accessories to the public.

Q: Do I need a piano at home to take piano lessons?

A: It is ideal to have a piano at home, but you can start lessons by using an electric keyboard to practice on. Most of our students already own and use electronic keyboards to practice on at home. We recommend that you have a keyboard that has regular sized keys as well as a touch sensitive response. A touch sensitive keyboard is a type of keyboard that will play louder if you press the key harder and will play softer if you press the key lighter.

Q: How will I benefit by coming here to take lessons?

A: Our students benefit greatly from our teachers and our studio. We have effective methods that are specifically tailored for the long struggling player or beginning student. Our instruction is proven to get great results for clients every time!! We use both innovative and traditional teaching techniques as well as modern method materials that are practical for the style being studied. Over the years we have had significant student output and satisfaction. We have a very high student retention rate because our students see great results with our instruction.

Our clientele is diverse in age, ability and musical experience. They come to us to build or improve on their skills. They trust us to help them get great results and see the benefits of our instruction. They enjoy recreational music making and desire to share it with family & friends. We offer a wide array of performance opportunities in the community for our students throughout the year. They play in bands, ensembles, accompany other musicians and also play solo. We at the Music School of CNY deem this success of our students as one of the hallmarks of our teaching.

We have students that regularly play professional gigs, are accepted into university music programs nationwide & have gone on to have careers in music.

We are professionals that teach as a main source of income and not as a sideline job or hobby. We take teaching seriously and are especially concerned about our student’s growth. As professionals, we are continually evaluating and improving our own teaching skills by attending many education seminars and workshops to further serve the student. Our goal at the Music School of CNY is to simply give YOU the skills & tools to enjoy music for a lifetime.
